Helpful Hints ~ Creating a New
Document or Scrap Page |
When creating a brand new
digital scrapbooking page, it is important to create a new document first. One type of new document that is helpful in
digital scrapbooking starts with a transparent background layer. After
you make this new document you can then start adding digital scrapbooking
papers, photos, or embellishments. This lesson will show how to make a new
document that is transparent as the starting point for making a digital
scrapbooking page.
Step 1: Open PSE 6 |
Open Photoshop® Elements 6 in Editor Mode Note: if you need help
with Editor Mode check out the Helpful Hints
page that covers opening PSE 6 in Editor
Mode |
Step 2: Making a New Document in PSE 6 to Start
your Digital Scrapbook Page |
Go to:
Or use the shortcut keys Ctrl
+ N |
Step 3: Selecting the Setting for the New
Document or Digital Scrapbook Page |
Next, a pop-up menu
will appear. The following are the
settings that are useful to set for creating a digital scrapbook page. First, it is important
to give the document a name. In
this example, the name is ‘Summer_pg1” (see arrow #1 in
red) Next, set the width
and height for a digital scrapbook page. If printing on a regular home
printer then these settings work well - 8.5
inches wide by 11 inches high (see arrow #2 in
red) |
Step 4: Continue Selecting the Settings for
the New Document |
Next, set the
resolution for printing is best between 200 – 300 pixels per inch. The higher
the number the better print quality. In this example this document is set for
300 (see
arrow #3 in red) Then, set color mode
for RGB color (see arrow #4 in red) Next, set the
background layer for Transparent (see arrow #5 in red) And now click OK (see arrow
#6 in red) |
Step 5: You have now created a New Document
for Scrapbooking! |
A new document will
open up in PSE 6 with all your settings that you selected. The new document you
have created will appear in your workspace
(see arrow #1 in red) Also you can see the
first layer you have in your new document in the layer panel. (see arrow #2 in red) It is helpful to name
this first layer #2 in your new document – Transparent Background Layer for more
help Naming Layers in Documents refer to Helpful Hints |
Special Note: Looking close at this new document
you have created - see that it has a transparent background layer. A transparent layer is marked by a gray and white checkered-pattern. |
Step 6: Now you are Ready to finish your
Digital Scrapbook Page |
Now that you have a
new document - you can start adding papers, embellishments or images to
create your digital scrapbooking page. In this example a
Quick Page was added. (For more information
about Quick Pages check Helpful Hints.) Notice in #1 that you can still see the first layer that
is the transparent background. Next in #2, you can see the 2nd layer just added -
the Quick Page. Next in # 3 you can see the transparent background showing
through in the area cut out to place a photo underneath the Quick Page For more information
about how to finish a digital scrapbooking page once you have created a new document please check out our Helpful Hints
